GREEN ROUTES OF SPRINGS AND WELLS

1. GREEN ROUTE. It starts at the (1) Fuente del Pilar (24 Obispo Pérez Muñoz Street), built in the 17th century. The water comes from the Bernabé Spring, the same water consumed by the residents of Carcabuey via the public water supply. (2) Fuentecilla de la Cruz de los Mozos (30 Obispo Pérez Muñoz Street), situated next to the Shrine of the Virgin of Las Angustias. It replicates an old fountain that once stood on the same spot. (3) Fuente del Fontanal. On the outskirts of the village stands this fountain, one of many that drain the Triassic limestones and dolomites of Cerro Moro. (4) El Chorrillo Fountain: true to its name, a trickle flows from the fountain, emerging from a small pediment also built into the hillside. (5) Cuchillo Fountain: a small spring with a network of irrigation channels (6) Dura Fountain. According to the story, the name does not come from the hardness of the water, as one might think, but rather because, during a great drought, people coming from the spring with their water jugs would tell those on their way: “it’s still running” (7) Fuente de la Manurga, (C/ Fuente Nueva) situated further down the slope from where it is currently located. A 17th-century stone (now preserved in the Municipal History Museum) bearing the inscription “The Council carried out this work whilst the Mayor was His Honour Dr Roque Manurga” confirms that the fountain was named in honour of the mayor.
