Charming open spaces, transformed over time, offer a unique and appealing character for tourists.
The earliest documentary records of Lucena date from the late 9th century, when we find documents referring to the city. In the 12th century AD, Al-Idrisi mentions the existence of outer suburbs inhabited by Muslims, who were barred from entering the walled enclosure of the medina. Houses, synagogues and a Talmudic school were located within the walls. From the 16th century onwards, Lucena experienced population growth and the urban fabric gradually consolidated, leading to the expansion seen from the mid-20th century. The city preserves open spaces such as the ‘llanetes’ and squares as part of its urban layout; these unique spaces have gradually transformed, giving each of these charming corners its own distinct character.
