FUENTE-TÓJAR GORGE TRAIL

The route runs through the municipality of Fuente-Tójar along various country lanes and roads. The area forms part of the Sierras Subbéticas, within the so-called Priego-Alcaudete depression, which lies at the junction between the Guadalquivir depression and the Baetic mountain ranges, and is crossed by two main watercourses: the River Salado and the River San Juan. Another place of interest is the group of farmhouses known as La Cubertilla, from where we can head towards the Caicena valley. This watercourse, a tributary of the River San Juan, joins the Salado to form the River Guadajoz, a saltwater waterway that runs through the eastern countryside of Córdoba. The route also passes through Todosaires, a cluster of more or less scattered farmsteads, many of which are abandoned, and from there we return to Fuente-Tójar. The historical significance of the area is evident in the long history of human settlement here, which began – albeit with its ups and downs – in the recent prehistoric period and continues to the present day. Of particular significance in this regard is Antiquity, a period marked by the emergence of the Iberian and later Roman settlement at Cerro de las Cabezas, through which the route passes.
