Throughout history, Carcabuey Castle has been a strategically and militarily significant site for controlling all the transport routes in the Subbética region, as it was the point where the roads linking five Andalusian provinces converged.
It stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the village and giving it its name, Cerro del Castillo, where remains and traces of human occupation have been found from all historical periods, dating back at least to the Late Bronze Age, as evidenced by the discovery of a bronze sword (1200 BC) currently housed in the British Museum in London, and a Cruz del Negro-style ceramic urn (800 BC) held in the Historical Museum of Priego de Córdoba.
