Lucena

Lucena is situated at an altitude of 487 m and 67 km from Córdoba. It has a population of 43,408 (INE, 2025) and its municipal area covers 348 km².

It is situated in the south of the province of Córdoba, in a strategic location between the regions of La Subbética, La Campiña Sur and the middle reaches of the River Genil. It comprises the districts of Jauja (pop. 1,080) and Las Navas del Selpillar (pop. 967), although there are also a number of scattered settlements such as Campo de Aras, Las Erillas and El Cristo Marroquí. It boasts a significant heritage of monuments and history, including, amongst others, the Castillo del Moral, the Church of San Mateo, the Jewish Necropolis and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Araceli, the town’s patron saint. Its name derives from Eli Ossana, the name originally given to it by the Jews, whilst the Muslims called it al-Yussana.
