Wine Route
Landscapes of vineyards and olive groves, walks along the Río Frío, historic farmhouses and birdwatching offer a unique experience for visitors.
Situated close to the municipal boundaries of Montilla, Cabra is steeped in the crops and activities that characterise this village in the Cordoba countryside. Whilst our village itself has a long-standing tradition of vine-growing and winemaking, this north-western part of the Egabrense region is home to even more such farms, clearly influenced by the nearby town of Montilla.
This route, starting from the Añorón farmhouse and the old Gamonosa track, heads towards the Río Frío stream, the physical boundary marking the boundary between the two municipalities, combining, in a beautiful mosaic of colours and shapes, the muted greens of the olive trees with the vivid, gleaming hues of the vines. In turn, dotted amongst these two dominant features, we can see some nut trees such as walnut and almond trees, etc., which, as well as providing a complementary product to the farmhouses in the area, are also used as shade trees, making the most of their generous, dense canopies.
This pleasant walk along the banks of the Río Frío and its crops is perfectly complemented on the return journey by a visit to two farmhouses steeped in history, Barahona and Olivillo. Here we can observe features typical of agricultural work that are not easily seen today, such as raised water channels or artesian wells by the roadside.
Between these two buildings, we can discover the Chorizas area, where remnants of natural vegetation still remain and where an interesting array of both plant and animal life thrives; it is common to see birds of prey soaring over the area, indicating the presence of food and a place for them to rest. Just before reaching the pass where this mass of native vegetation is concentrated, we come to the Choriza spring, with a small pool at its base that collects the water flowing from it for agricultural use.
On the final stretch, along south-facing slopes, we can enjoy fantastic views over the municipality of Cabra and the fertile farmland that surrounds it.
