In the historic centre of Lucena lies this square dedicated to the Archangel Saint Michael, due to the presence of the gateway of the same name, built in 1544 in the Gothic-Renaissance style, which belongs to the Parish Church of San Mateo. In the square, the remains of the old sacristy of the Church of San Mateo are preserved, consisting of part of the party wall of the old sacristy and a brick vaulted structure. At the corner of the square stands a bust dedicated to the Lucena-born writer Luís Barahona de Soto. Born in Lucena in 1545, he was one of the greatest poets of the late Renaissance period, author of ‘Las lágrimas de Angélica’, an epic poem mentioned in Don Quixote. The sculpture was created in 1961 by the sculptor Amadeo Ruiz Olmos.
