This stage follows the entire length of the Sierra Abrevia PR-A 422 public footpath, which opened in 2021. It starts at the old Doña Mencía railway station and initially follows the Greenway towards Cabra, before turning off towards Fuente de las Pilas to climb the slopes of the Sierra de Abrevia, situated on the northern edge of the protected area. During the ascent, the views of Doña Mencía are particularly striking, with its characteristic white houses surrounded by olive groves and rolling hills crowned with holm oaks. As the altitude increases, the agricultural landscape gives way to lush Mediterranean vegetation typical of the more humid and shady areas. The trail enters a dense and attractive forest, following ancient cattle tracks and livestock routes such as the Colada de Baena to Carcabuey, a testament to the region’s historical past. At the highest elevations, limestone pavements and rocky outcrops predominate. From the triangulation point on Sierra Abrevia, rebuilt in 2021, there are magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding area. The route continues through areas of great scenic value, such as the Cañada de la Laguna, where a traditional hut and threshing floor have been restored, and the Monteprieto area, where pastoral buildings and features linked to farming and livestock activities are still preserved. The final descent towards Zuheros follows the Colada de Pozuelo, alongside its spring, from where you can enjoy excellent views of this picturesque white village dominated by its castle.
