Nature lovers and hikers can now enjoy an improved version of the “Sendero de Fuente del Conde” trail, also known as the “Camino de Magán”, which has been signposted thanks to work carried out by Iznájar Town Council (Córdoba) using its own funds. This circular route, which covers around 5.5 km, immerses hikers in the rich natural beauty of the Sierra de Campo Agro.
The route is certified by the Andalusian Mountaineering Federation and begins in the Iznájar hamlet of Fuente del Conde. From this point, most of the route follows a concrete and earthen path, making it a walk suitable for the whole family.
Our steps take us through what is known locally as a ‘sea of olive trees’, an exceptional landscape found only in parts of Andalusia, which is then transformed into the liquid gold that wins so many awards and brings so much joy to Spanish cuisine. This spectacle blends with the native flora typical of the Mediterranean forest.
The highlight of this route is the climb up to the Sierra de Campo Agro (929m). Its hills mark the boundary between three provinces: Granada (Loja), Málaga (Villanueva de Tapia) and Córdoba (Iznájar). In the case of the latter, the views of the town are accompanied by unforgettable panoramic views of the Iznájar Reservoir, also known as the Lake of Andalusia, as it is one of the largest in the whole of Andalusia. Furthermore, from here you can also see the Pico de la Tiñosa, the highest point in the province of Córdoba.
In this setting, crowning the hamlet of Fuente del Conde (Iznájar), stands the Hermitage of La Cruz de Magán, which features elements of traditional Andalusian architecture. Inside is a small cross which is carried down to the hamlet in a procession every 3 May, coinciding with the main festivities in honour of the Holy Cross.
This natural viewpoint in the Cordoban Subbética is the final point from which the return journey begins, leading back to where the trail starts: the hamlet of Fuente del Conde, popularly known as ‘La Alcuilla’.
The Tourism and Sports departments of Iznájar Town Council would like to thank the local community for their collaboration in launching this historic trail, which joins the map of hiking routes that Iznájar has prepared for lovers of active tourism and nature, and is yet another addition to the range of tourist and sporting activities already offered by the municipality for the most adventurous travellers.
