It is approximately 2 km long from its first narrows to the village of Zuheros, with some sections reaching a width of 400 m. Running south to north, this canyon forms the most rugged section of this seasonal stream, through which most of the surface water drained by the Sierra de Cabra-Zuheros massif in this direction flows. It reaches its greatest depth in the Charco Hondo Gorge, near Zuheros, and its walls are home to various species of rock-dwelling birds.
The Bailón River Canyon is listed under number AND-225 in the Spanish Inventory of Places of Geological Interest, as well as in the Andalusian Catalogue of Georesources (2011) and features on the list of outstanding geosites within the Sierras Subbéticas Geopark, standing out in its own right as one of the elements of greatest geological and scenic value within our protected area.
