Carcabuey
Situated in the south-eastern corner of the province of Córdoba, at an altitude of 639 m
It is the municipality in Córdoba with the most protected land, as 7,071 hectares of its municipal area lie within the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, accounting for 87.53 per cent of its territory. It borders the municipalities of Zuheros and Luque to the north, Priego to the east and south, Rute to the south-west and Cabra to the west. Currently, the population of Carcabuey stands at around 2,300 inhabitants (INE, 2025). The predominant crop is the olive grove, mainly of the Picual variety, which covers the entire foothills of the numerous mountain ranges that dot its territory. Although to a lesser extent, quince orchards are also significant, occupying most of the river valleys; their fruit is largely destined for export.
Carcabuey celebrates its festivities in honour of the Virgin of the Dawn in August, combining religious ceremonies with traditions such as the ‘toro de cuerda’ (a bull on a rope) and open-air dances. The patron saint’s festivities in honour of the Virgin of the Castle take place in early September. The Corpus Christi celebrations are particularly attractive; on this day, the town’s streets are adorned with carpets of multicoloured sawdust. Finally, the Pascua de los Moraos is also worth mentioning: an unusual carnival declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia, which takes place on Easter Sunday.
