Priego de Córdoba
Priego is a town situated in the south-eastern corner of the province of Córdoba, 100 km from the provincial capital.
Priego is situated on a travertine rock platform at an altitude of 652 m and has a population of 21,764, spread across its town centre and its nine hamlets (notable among which are Las Lagunillas, Castil de Campos and Zagrilla) and seventeen scattered settlements. The highest peaks in the natural park – and, by extension, in the entire province of Córdoba – are found within its municipal boundaries, notably La Tiñosa (1,570 m), Pico Bermejo (1,476 m) and Sierra Alhucemas (1,453 m). The foothills of these mountains are covered by vast expanses of mountain olive groves that form part of the territory covered by the ‘Priego de Córdoba’ PDO, under whose label some of the world’s most renowned olive oils are produced.
Its rich heritage includes the Fuente del Rey, the Fuente de la Salud, the Balcón del Adarve, the Carnicerías Reales, the Barrio de la Villa, the Municipal Museum and its recently restored castle. However, one of the town’s main hallmarks is its wealth of Baroque monuments, notably the churches of La Asunción, La Aurora and San Francisco, amongst others.
