It is the only cave in the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park that has been developed for tourism, and it is accessed via a tarmac road (CO-6210) leading up from Zuheros, as well as an Ecomuseum built nearby to showcase its natural and archaeological features. The latest explorations, carried out in August 2014 by the G40 caving group, have brought its surveyed length to 3,367 m and its depth to 75 m; these dimensions mean it is included in the Catalogue of Caves of Spain, making it the first cave in the province to be included in this select group.
Several excavations have been carried out there, documenting its occupation by Neanderthals during the Middle Palaeolithic (35,000 years ago) and by Homo sapiens during the Upper Palaeolithic (30,000–9,000 BC). However, the most significant findings have highlighted its importance for understanding the Neolithic period (6,000–3,000 BC). One of the most significant objects found in the Cueva de los Murciélagos is the famous Zuheros Vase, a vessel made of almagra pottery (made with iron oxide and a reddish colour), discovered in 1938 and dated to between 4300–3900 BC. It is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, where other objects from the cave are also kept, such as grinding stones and the bones of deer, goats and bears.
The Cueva de los Murciélagos is a major tourist attraction for Zuheros, the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park and the province of Córdoba, which contributed to its designation as a Site of Cultural Interest in 1985 and a Natural Monument in 2001. It is also included in the Andalusian Inventory of Georesources (2011), listed under number AND-227 in the Spanish Inventory of Sites of Geological Interest, and features on the list of outstanding geosites within the Sierras Subbéticas Geopark. Since 2007, it has been part of the select group of the seven wonders of the province of Córdoba.
