Its municipal area is the fourth largest in the region and one of the largest in the whole province. A significant part of its territory falls within a protected natural area. Luque has a population of 2,796 (INE, 2025), the vast majority of whom live in the town centre. Its main economic activity is olive farming, with production falling under the Baena Designation of Origin; however, the town’s industrial base is also noteworthy.
Luque boasts a rich heritage of historic buildings. Among the finest examples are Luque Castle, restored in 2023, and the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, popularly known as the ‘Cathedral of the Subbética’.
It celebrates its Royal Fair in honour of St Bartholomew, the town’s patron saint, on the weekend of 24 August. Its Holy Week celebrations are also noteworthy, being among the oldest in the province of Córdoba.
