Mahína Port
A mountain pass at an altitude of 1,165 m, separating La Tiñosa (E) from the Sierra Alhucemas (W).
It is the natural route between the Navasequilla area and the hamlet of Las Lagunillas. The Tiñosa Trail passes through Puerto Mahína; since 2022, this has been the official route up the mountain, following a path which branches off eastwards from this point and culminates at the summit.
From a geological point of view, this landscape is the result of a synclinal fold and is of particular interest due to the presence of radiolarites, sedimentary rocks formed by the primitive accumulation of radiolarian shells. This type of soil is known by the curious name of ‘tierra granujá’ in the hamlet of Las Lagunillas, a reference to its poor quality for cultivation.
The explanation for the name of this pass seems to stem from the evolution that occurs when pronouncing the surname ‘Medina’, belonging to a former inhabitant of the Cortijo de Puerto Mahína. From ‘Medina’ it became ‘meína’ by omitting the ‘d’, resulting in the current name ‘mahína’. On some maps, it is erroneously labelled as “Puerto Mañina”.
