Route
The town of Rute is situated in the south-west of the province of Córdoba, at an altitude of 635 metres, at the foot of the mountain range of the same name, ...
It comprises several villages scattered throughout its municipal area: Zambra, Llanos de Don Juan, El Nacimiento, Las Piedras, Palomares and La Hoz, as well as smaller hamlets such as Los Pérez, Las Cañas, El Lanchar and Las Herreras. Its population stands at 9,845 (December 2000), many of whom live in its more than 20 districts, and its main economic activity is olive cultivation, with livestock farming playing a secondary role. Today, Rute has achieved significant economic development and its industry is a benchmark for quality and service. It is also worth highlighting the growing popularity of tourism year on year, driven by its excellent aniseed-flavoured liqueurs, Christmas sweets and various themed museums. Its patron saint is the Virgen de la Cabeza, in whose honour the patron saint’s festivities are held; these were declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia in 2019.
The origins of Rute date back to the Arab period, as it was in the 13th century that the Muslims built the fortress of Rute el Viejo at the foot of the Cañada de la Palomina, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Rute.
