Mural dedicated to women in science
This mural depicts Rachel Louise Carson (1907–1964), who is regarded not only as a leading figure in the fields of marine biology and conservationism, but also as one of the pioneers of the environmental movement. Through her writings and books such as *Silent Spring* (1962). This work was pioneering in its analysis of the harmful environmental effects of certain pesticides that were widely used at the time, and consequently caused considerable controversy within the industry that marketed them. It was also an inspiring book for the environmental movement and for raising awareness about caring for the environment. The aim is to publicise and highlight the role of women in the scientific field, as well as to provide new generations with role models to stimulate their interest in science. To this end, the book also adopts an egalitarian perspective that seeks to do justice to the gruelling work—silenced for many years—carried out by many women in this field.
