La Hoz

La Hoz

Ubicado al pie de las Sierras Subbéticas, ofrece un rico ecosistema fluvial, paisajes de huertas y olivares, y un yacimiento ibérico estratégico.

The village of La Hoz is situated to the north-west of the municipality of Iznájar, at the foot of the Sierras Subbéticas, with the river that gives the village its name forming the boundary between the municipalities of Iznájar and Rute.

It is likely that the place name derives from the remains of the structures emerging from the Iberian fortification itself, which exists in the village.

Water is a constant feature in Iznájar, and so most of its villages are situated alongside river courses, as is the case with the village of La Hoz, or near the numerous watering holes or springs found within the municipal area. The presence of the river fosters a rich ecosystem, characterised by abundant flora, including a wide variety of plants such as chickweed, plantain, burdock, irises and water lilies, as well as poplars and reed beds.

The market garden land, the olive groves, the extensive stands of poplars and the limestone terrain that forms the ‘Garganta’ where the River La Hoz rises, constitute landscape features of unique beauty.

The archaeological remains found in the village reveal an Iberian presence, with the discovery of pottery featuring geometric decoration and fragments of amphorae from the same period. Of particular note is the Iberian fortified enclosure located at the site known as “Cerro del Castillejo”, a site that occupies a strategic position, with steep slopes on all sides, clearly serving to control the river and the roads and paths that run alongside it.

Among the elements of civil architecture, the “Bridge over the River La Hoz” stands out, linking the municipalities of Rute and Iznájar.
