ST JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH

Iglesia contemporánea con fachada sobria, crucificado sevillano del XVII, imagen de San Juan Bautista de Alonso de Mena y Virgen de los Dolores.

Located on Calle Iglesia, the Parish Church of St John the Baptist is a modern building.

All that remains of the old church, built in 1769, is the stonework. The current building was constructed in 1978 and features a sober façade with a gabled roof, a central oculus and a bell gable on the left-hand side, comprising three sections and a chancel, which is also linteled and panelled with wood, decorated with coffered panels.

The chancel features a life-size crucifix (anonymous, 17th century) in the Sevillian style of the mid-17th century, whilst the image of Saint John the Baptist, a polychrome gilded wood carving, came from the workshop of Alonso de Mena around 1630. It also features a beautiful carving of the Virgin of Sorrows and, presiding over the sanctuary, an 18th-century Nazarene figure from the circle of José de Mora.
