Church of the Assumption

Church of the Assumption

Ubicada al pie del Cerro del Castillo, destaca por su torre del siglo XVIII, retablo mayor y bóvedas de cañón con lunetos.

At the foot of Cerro del Castillo, in a vantage point from which the whole village can be seen, stands the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with its majestic appearance. The exact origins of this building are unknown, but it may be that the old Main Church of Santa María, to which Ruy Díaz de Berrio referred in his will as early as 1383, stood on the site of the present church, rather than the building itself, which has been altered over the centuriesand whose appearance is very different from that of the time.

However, this is mere conjecture, as nothing remains of the original building. Rafael Osuna Luque, in his ‘History of Carcabuey’, tells us that it ‘was completed around the mid-16th century; however, only the side entrance survives from that period; the rest of the current building corresponds to work carried out throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries’. These later works include: the tower, completed in 1780, as stated in an inscription at its base; the high altarpiece; theChapel of the Tabernacle; and the barrel vaultswith lunettes that cover the interior of the building.
