The “La Judea” museum was established in 2007 thanks to Iznájar Town Council, the “Rafael Botí” Foundation for the Visual Arts and the La Judea PopulusIudici Cultural Association. “La Judea” represents the Jewish people during the time of Jesus Christ, appearing in most of the processions during Iznájar’s Holy Week, with their active participation in the Good Friday processions being particularly notable. A tradition dating back to the 17th century, when they were part of the brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and took part in what is known as the “Paso Antiguo”, enacting the Passion in the streets despite opposition from the ecclesiastical authorities, who even went so far as to ban them years later. In 1984, the La Judea Populus Iudici Cultural Association was founded, tasked with reviving the traditional re-enactment and bringing back to the streets everything that the clergy had banned.

In this Exhibition Hall, you can admire the costumes of the “Jews”, which are similar to those worn in medieval processions and stand out for their colourfulness. The Judea procession is led by Pilate, Claudia Procula (Procla), two scribes popularly known as “moñitos”, and two servants or attendants. It has a hierarchical organisation in which the captains and the ‘túnica’ bearers stand out, along with the figure of the ‘tiraor’, whose role is to keep the thieves together with a long rope, and finally the town crier. Dressed as a Jew, but belonging to the Brotherhood of the Apostles, we find the figure of Simon of Cyrene and the four executioners who guard the image of Christ.
