Fuente del Pilar

Fuente del Pilar

Fuente histórica del siglo XVIII con diseño circular y cuatro lóbulos, decorada con placas geométricas y volutas, ideal para apreciar la arquitectura local.

At the end of Calle Pilar, opposite Calle de Las Parras (now Obispo Pérez Muñoz), stands a fountain now known as El Pilar, formerly known as Fuente de los Caños, situated in a small square which is enhanced by its presence. Built in the 18th century, like many of Carcabuey’s most distinctive houses, it reflects the spirit of that era—a time of demographic and economic growth—aimed at giving the town the appearance of a significant city. It is a circular structure forming four lobes, hand-carved from a single piece of limestone, with four spouts fed by water from four pipes flowing from a central pilaster comprising several sections distinguished by their thickness and ornamentation.

The structure, simply decorated with geometric patterns carved into the stone, is topped by volutes supporting a sphere in which an iron frame is set; its function was perhaps to secure a religious image or, later, a street lamp.
