Main Parish Church of the Assumption
A clear, distinctive sound invites us to continue our tour of the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and the Angels. It stands at the centre of the Old Town Square. Dating back to the Middle Ages, it was built by the Order of Calatrava on the site of an ancient Muslim mosque, which was subsequently dedicated to Saint Mary of the Angels in 1241, the year the city was conquered by Ferdinand III. The interior features five naves organised by rows of pointed arches resting on 44 red marble columns and covered by barrel vaults. The high altarpiece, the work of Melchor de Aguirre, is crafted from red and black marble, based on a design by the renowned Granada-born architect José Granados de la Barrera. The central niche houses a sculpture of Our Lady of the Assumption, a work from Granada dating from 1693. Also noteworthy are the carved wooden choir and the organ situated within it.
