The processes of limestone dissolution give rise to almost all the features associated with the karst landscape. Poljes such as La Nava, the dolines of Los Hoyones and the spectacular lapiaz of Los Lanchares are unique examples. Underground features are also present, with numerous caves and chasms, including the Cueva de los Murciélagos and the Cueva de Cabra, respectively. The springs located at the foot of the mountain range indicate that this entire massif, as well as the adjacent ones, is riddled with holes like a piece of Gruyère cheese. This is why watercourses, such as the River Bailón, are scarce.
