The Abyss and Archaeological Site of Cueva del Ángel

The Abyss and Archaeological Site of Cueva del Ángel

Asentamiento paleolítico único en España, con restos de homínidos y rellenos geológicos de gran interés científico.

The chasm forms part of the Cueva del Ángel archaeological site, an important Palaeolithic settlement dating from the pre-Neanderthal and Neanderthal periods, between 400,000 and 500,000 years old, and the only site in Spain dated as a permanent hominid settlement for over 300,000 years. The vertical cavity was used as a waste dump for centuries, resulting in around 70 metres of deposits comprising both geological material and human waste, a resource that will prove significant for scientific studies of the site as a whole.
