Church of St Francis

Church of St Francis

Templo gótico-mudéjar con reformas barrocas del siglo XVIII, destaca por sus bóvedas de arista, cúpulas gallonadas y rica decoración de yeserías.

Its construction dates from 1510–12, commissioned byDon Pedro Fernández de Córdoba, the first Marquis of Priego, and dedicated to Saint Stephen; however, it was not completed until 1548–48. It is alate Gothic or Mudejar church, remodelled in the 18th century inthe Baroque style by Jerónimo Sánchez de Rueda and later by Juan de Dios Santaella. Virtually all that remains of the original church is the ground floor. The renovation work began in 1712, and the intention was to apply the same treatment as had been carried out in the Church of La Asunción:groin vaults, ribbed domes and profuse Baroque plasterwork decoration.
