Paseo del Coso, ‘Plaza de España’
The heart of the city, this square is the oldest in the town and was used as a venue for markets, festivals, bullfights, executions and military parades until the construction of the Plaza Nueva in 1618. The Plaza del Coso was situated next to the walled enclosure that belonged to the old town, which formed part of the Medinaceli Palace and Castle. In the southern corner, there was a sculpture of a child holding a shell dating from the last third of the 18th century. Originally, it was intended for a spot in the garden of the former Ducal Palace of Medinaceli, but after several relocations, it was finally installed in one of the side corners of the Plaza del Coso. Crafted in bronze and small in size, it depicts a child, possibly representing the god Altis, who holds a shell from which water pours. The original piece is now preserved at the City Interpretation Centre in the Palace of the Counts of Santa Ana.
