CASTLE OF THE COUNTS OF CABRA

CASTLE OF THE COUNTS OF CABRA

Murallas árabes, torres históricas y vistas panorámicas destacan en este antiguo barrio, ideal para los amantes de la historia y la arquitectura.

The oldest neighbourhood in Cabra, the site of the ancient Licabrum, an early Iberian settlement that would later become Egabro. This neighbourhood is home to the remains of the Moorish wall, as well as the Parish Church of the Assumption and the Angels and the Castle of the Counts of Cabra.

The thickness of the walls is approximately 2.60 metres. As for the towers, two of them are well known, plus the location of two others, which can be seen on either side of the current entrance gate to the enclosure. In the centre of the east wall, slightly projecting, stands the keep. It is almost square and stands just over 20 metres high. About 11 metres above the current ground level, there is a square chamber with an octagonal barrel vault, featuring drum-shaped corners. The other surviving tower is situated at the north-west corner. It has a square plan, with the corner facing the interior of the enclosure chamfered, and retains some 10 metres of its height. Today, the enclosure houses the convent-school of the Pious Sisters.
