Convent Church of San Martín (San Agustín)

Convent Church of San Martín (San Agustín)

Destaca por su impresionante recinto elíptico y una alta cúpula. El retablo mayor y cinco menores son obras maestras del siglo XVIII.

This church belongs to a community of Augustinian Recollect nuns, founded in 1639, although work on this extraordinary building began in 1669 based on plans by the local architect Juan Trujillo Moreno, and was completed in 1726, following the final creative impetus provided by the architect Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo, who designed the impressive façades. Its main space is, in fact, a monumental elliptical hall with a longitudinal layout, a design that is also reflected in its high dome rising from a drum. Inside, the high altarpiece stands out; it was created in 1730 by Martín de los Reyes, based on a design by Francisco José Guerrero, and is notably influenced by the stylistic models of Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo. Likewise, five smaller altarpieces, by the same artist and designer, adorn the walls of the elliptical nave.
