Laguna del Salobral

Este humedal cordobés es ideal para observar aves acuáticas y limícolas, rodeado de olivos y viñedos, con fauna diversa como ranas, sapos y galápagos.

TheLaguna del Conde or del SalobralNature Reserve forms part of thewetland complexin the south of the province ofCórdoba, alongside the permanent lakes ofZóñar,RincónandAmarga, and the seasonal lakes ofTíscarand LosJarales. All of these have been protected due to their importance for the wintering and nesting of waterbirds. It is situated some 6 km east of the town ofLuque, close to the provincial border withJaén.

TheLaguna del Conde or Salobral Nature Reserve isthe largest in the province ofCórdoba, and one of the major inland wetlands inAndalusia; however, its depth rarely exceeds one metre. This seasonal lagoon is of mixed origin, fed by rainfall, surface runoff (from theQuejigalandCarrascón streams) and groundwater. Its waters exhibit significant fluctuations in salinity, depending on the source of its main inflows.

Surrounded by a landscape of olive groves, vineyards and cereal fields, typical of the fertile Cordoba countryside, this lagoon features riparian vegetation consisting of cattails, reeds, rushes and reeds.

Due to the gentle slope of the land and the shallow depth of the wetland, it is home to numerous wading birds that use the lagoon as a stopover and breeding ground. The most significant bird species include the black-winged stilt, the northern lapwing, the stone curlew and the marsh harrier, amongst many others.

To this rich biodiversity must be added the presence of a very varied and interesting fauna, notably including the common frog, natterjack toads, common spadefoot toads, viperine snakes, spotted crake, weasels, stoats, rabbits, hares, polecats and the European pond turtle, amongst others.
