The small square is located on Calle Flores, a key venue during Holy Week in Lucena. Once the link between the walled medieval town of Lucena and the Barrio de Santiago district, it is the route taken by many of the processions; navigating it poses a particular challenge for the santeros, given the narrowness of the street.
The project for the monument to the santero was an initiative that originated years ago within the Santería community and later received the backing of the Town Council. As an interesting aside, it is worth noting that Pedro Cantero, the sculptor, modelled his son’s face on the sculpture.
It should also be noted that at the foot of the monument one can read various inscriptions written by Juan Parejo and Lucena’s official chronicler, Francisco López Salamanca.
