This square dates back to 1620, two years after King Philip III granted Lucena the status of a city, as Lucena had previously been a market town. Over the centuries, the square has gone by various names – Plaza Real, Plaza de la República, Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza de Alfonso XII and Plaza del Generalísimo – but it has always been known as Plaza Nueva.
