Church of Our Lady of Hope
Construction of this church began in 1801 at the behest of the Dukes of Medinaceli, and the work, which was overseen by the Lucena-born architect Andrés Cordón, was completed in 1814. It is a Neoclassical church with a Latin cross plan. It consists of three naves. The side naves are covered by four small elliptical domes, whilst the central nave features a barrel vault with lunettes, crowned by a magnificent semi-spherical dome without a drum, situated above the transept.
Attributed to Francisco José Guerrero, the majestic high altarpiece is made of gilded wood against a green background and features decoration typical of the third quarter of the 18th century, dating back to around 1770. Furthermore, the altarpiece houses the image of the patron saint, Our Father Jesus of Sorrows, an ‘Ecce homo’ made of papier-mâché in 1664.
