Road to Priego de Córdoba Castle
Whilst visiting the castle, you can stroll along a pedestrianised street that follows the path between the fortress walls and those of the medieval town. This section reveals sections of the walls where you can see the different construction techniques used during the Middle Ages. You will be struck by the small gate or postern of the 14th–15th-century castle, which has a Roman inscription added in modern times above its lintel. The Molino de la Puerta, which gives its name to the street, will transport you to the past as you imagine the smells and the hustle and bustle of the town, inhabited by craftsmen, millers, carpenters, and so on. The mill, attached to the castle, remained in use until the 20th century. Evidence of this can be seen in the mill’s millpits – vaults that housed the millstones that turned the grinding stones, which have now been restored. Along the route, you can also visit one of the few surviving sections of the 13th-century Islamic fortress.
