The ‘La Encantá’ Cave
The Encantá Cave takes its name from an ancient legend told by the inhabitants of Almedinilla. It tells the story of an impossible love between a Moorish woman and a Christian man. A beautiful young woman used to go down to the river to wash clothes every day; there she met a young Christian man who, upon seeing her, fell in love with her.Abeautiful romance blossomed between them, which they managed to keep secret for only a few days, as her brothers soon discovered it and killed the young Christian man. When she discovered her beloved’s body, she went mad and took refuge in a nearby cave where she spent her final days. Since then, it is said that on the dawn of St John’s Day, the young Moorish woman can be seen on the riverbank waiting to meet her beloved. The cave is situated on the banks of the River Caicena, near the Historical Museum.
