Castillo del Moral – Archaeological and Ethnological Museum

Fortaleza medieval con torres históricas y museo que explora la evolución cultural y física de Lucena, destacando su pasado judío y la captura de Boabdil.

Right in the heart of the city stands the Castillo del Moral, a medieval fortress that has been designated a site of cultural interest. Its central section, the oldest part, was probably built between the 11th and 12th centuries, during the heyday of Jewish Lucena. Its original square layout features towers at the corners, notably the Torre del Moral, with an octagonal base and a Baroque roof, displaying a coat of arms on the exterior that gives the fortress its name. Also noteworthy is the Keep, possibly the cell of the last king of Granada, Boabdil ‘El Chico’, who was captured at the Battle of Martín González in 1483. From the 16th century onwards, the castle was transformed into a residential palace for the lords of Lucena, the Marquises of Comares, before later becoming the Palace and Castle of the Medinaceli family. It currently houses the city’s Archaeological and Ethnological Museum, with a series of exhibition rooms exploring the evolution of life on Earth, the cultural and physical evolution of humankind, and the city of Lucena’s journey towards modernity.
