Archaeological remains at Cerro del Hachuelo
This site spans a cultural sequence from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages: Palaeolithic sites featuring Mousterian stone tools along the River Genil, linked to the Argaric funerary tradition; open-air Neolithic settlements, such as those identified at the village of El Higueral and the sites of El Tomillar and El Tesorillo; and Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlements in the numerous caves dotting the banks of the River Genil, the Bronze Age necropolises at Camorro de la Isla, and that at the site of Valdearenas.
Excavations carried out at several of these sites have unearthed items of great value, now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Córdoba, notably a glass cup with two handles, dating from the 1st–2nd centuries AD, which must have formed part of a burial offering and which, incidentally, gives an insight into the high degree of Romanisation achieved by the inhabitants of the area, as well as their high standard of living.
