A ponor is an opening through which surface water (from a river or lake) flows wholly or partly into a karst groundwater system.
For much of the year, the water seeps into the ground through cracks in the lake bed and via a sinkhole that suddenly appeared in 2012. During the rainy season, due to the low permeability of the clays at the bottom, La Nava de Cabra tends to flood, and on occasions the sinkhole is unable to cope and the area becomes waterlogged
