Church of San Juan del Cerro

Church of San Juan del Cerro

El templo más antiguo de la ciudad alberga un ara gótica del 650 d.C., destacando por su devoción mariana, única en Córdoba y rara en Andalucía.

The oldest church in the city. Founded in the 7th century by Bacauda, Bishop of Egabro (an Egabrian prelate who took part in the Eighth Council of Toledo), it houses a unique artefact within its walls. It is an ara (a stone in the shape of a pilaster) which, in Gothic script, consecrates the church to Saint Mary on 30 May in the year 688 (650 AD). It is the oldest epigraphic record of Marian devotion in the diocese of Córdoba and one of the few in Andalusia.
