Followinga series of alterationssince the 16th century, its construction was completed in the early 19th century. Designed inthe Baroque styleby Remigio del Mármol, it was finished in 1803. It comprisesthree pools of varying levels, with an elongated shape characterised by curved contours. In the first basin stands asculpture of a lionfighting a serpent, a work attributed to the Neoclassical sculptor Álvarez Cubero*. In the second, created by Remigio del Mármol, the central figure of the monument is asculpture of Neptune and Amphitriteriding a chariot drawn by horses emerging from the water. From here, the water cascades down into the final basin and eventually flows out through the Clero spout. The fountain features 139 spouts, many of them adorned with stone masks bearing ghostly faces. Declareda National Monument.
