ADEBO Reserve

Refugio en las Sierras Subbéticas, combina paisajes forestales y agrarios, rescata burros y ofrece experiencias culturales únicas con artistas y escritores.

ADEBO was founded in 1989. The Foundation’s work includes activities to promote the donkey – a symbol of pacifism – and the rescue of abandoned donkeys; over the last few years, more than 150 have been taken in at its Rute Sanctuary. It has been working for 20 years on a specific programme to preserve the Andalusian-Cordoban breed of donkeys. The Casa del Burro facilities are situated in the area known as ‘El Pinar de la Sierra de Rute’, in the heart of the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, within a landscape of great natural beauty that combines woodland areas with agricultural ones. Since its inception, it has enjoyed the collaboration of distinguished and famous figures of great social influence, such as Rafael Alberti, Camilo José Cela, Antonio Gala, José Saramago, Ágata Ruíz de la Prada, Tico Medina, Carmen Thyssen, and others. All of them have been awarded the title of “Honorary Muleteers”. Furthermore, the Foundation has worked in the cultural sphere in collaboration with the theatre group La Fura dels Baus. Collaborations have also taken place with musicians, poets, writers and journalists. We have always sought to engage with the relationship between the wonderful and little-known world of the donkey and culture, art and religion.
