Castle Chapel

Castle Chapel

Templo barroco con planta de cruz latina y decoración de rocalla, destaca por su sencilla espadaña y renovaciones tras el terremoto de 1951.

Inside the castle stands achapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which took the name ‘Castillo’ from the site on which it is situated. This church, built during the Middle Ages, was probably the first parish church in this town. The abandonment of the fortress and the construction of a new church outside the castle meant that this chapel was reduced to a small chapel. In the 18th century, the chapel underwent major alterations that gave it its distinctive popular Baroque style. In 1952, following the damage caused by the earthquake of 19 May 1951, it was renovated by the people of Carcabuey. The entrance is situated on the right-hand side of the church; it is very simple, consisting of a semicircular brick arch, framed by pilasters and an entablature crowned by small pendants. On the right arm of the transept stands the simple bell gable with a single opening.

The interior has a Latin cross plan, comprising a nave of two bays covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, a transept with a semi-spherical vault on pendentives, and the arms of the transept and the chancel, with barrel vaults and lunettes. The rocaille decoration is concentrated in the transept, with radial bands and lunettes on the four walls containing windows.
