The Councils
The village of Los Concejos is situated in the south-east of the municipality of Iznájar, between the “Sierra del Membrillar” and the reservoir. Located on the left bank of the reservoir, it offers a route of great scenic and natural beauty.
The path along the left bank of the reservoir is an ideal route for nature-based tourism, whether through hiking or cycle touring.
The landscape, dominated by olive groves, also features, particularly along the “Arroyo del Perejil”, a wide variety of native forest species typical of Mediterranean woodlands and crops, such as holm oak, gall oak, almond trees, pomegranate trees, fig trees, irises, rosemary, saffron, orchids, daisies, gorse and others.
In Los Concejos, there are several natural viewpoints overlooking the reservoir, offering a chance to observe the area’s rich birdlife: ducks, cormorants, grey herons, grebes, sandpipers, gulls, and reptiles such as the ocellated lizard, tortoises, badgers and the ladder snake.
From these viewpoints, to the left of the village of Los Concejos, you can see the dam that holds back the waters of the River Genil, and to the right, the reservoir waters beneath which the villages and hamlets of Iznájar were submerged, along with orchards on the riverbank, such as the Remolino, San José and Huertas de la Granja orchards.
Located opposite the village and surrounded by the reservoir is the ‘Cerro de La Mezquita’, listed as a Site of Cultural Interest by the Regional Government of Andalusia, as it contains an Iberian fortified enclosure, which tells us of the presence of humans in these lands during that period.
