Priego de Córdoba Castle

Priego de Córdoba Castle

Fortaleza islámica con torres y arcos de herradura. Destaca la Torre del Homenaje, Monumento Nacional, ideal para amantes de la historia y arquitectura.

A fortress of Islamic origin, renovated in the 13th and 14th centuries.Essentially military innature, it is austere, as befits the defensive purposes for which it was originally built. It consists of a walled perimeter, punctuated bysquare towers and a cylindrical tower. At itsmain entrance, there is an access corridor with two pointed horseshoe arches, framed by an alfiz, with a gate leading to the outside and a slot for a portcullis. TheKeephas been a National Historic-Artistic Monument since 1943. It is situated off-centre in the parade ground and stands 30 metres high, part of which is now semi-underground. Chronologically, this tower, also known asthe Torre Gorda, can be dated to the second half of the 13th century, when the town of Priego was a commandery of theOrder of Calatrava; however, the presence of Nasrid capitals on the windows suggests the possibility that it was an addition from the first half of the 14th century, when Priego once again came under Islamic rule.
