The Adelantado

The Adelantado

Paisaje espléndido con olivares y sierras, fuente histórica con agua aclimatada y tradición de matanza del cerdo en diciembre.

The village of El Adelantado lies to the south-west of the municipality of Iznájar, facing the rising sun and at the foot of the hill known as ‘Las Monjas’, beside the stream of the same name and bordering the province of Málaga.

The name “Adelantado” recalls the skirmishes that were the subject of dispute between the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and the Kingdom of Castile for much of the 15th century.

From the “La Loma” hills, one can admire a splendid landscape, a mosaic of olive groves, hills and traditional houses.

Among the most notable architectural features is the “Las Albercas” Fountain, used as a public washhouse and watering hole. Although recently restored, its origins date back to the first houses built in the area, characterised by its temperate water, warm in winter and cool in summer.

This fountain and watering hole, an example of the way of life and cultural history of the settlements in the area, shows us what daily life was like for its inhabitants, clearly demonstrating, from an ethnographic perspective, the importance of agricultural, livestock and social activities carried out in times not too long ago.

As an aspect of popular and traditional culture that still endures in the village, the ‘pig slaughter’ stands out; a family and neighbourhood festival that takes place in the last month of the year.
