Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

Edificio gótico-mudéjar del siglo XVI con impresionante cúpula barroca y decoración rococó, destaca por su Sagrario, obra maestra del barroco español.

Construction began in 1525, at the behest of the Marquise of Priego. This 16th-century Gothic-Mudejar building has three naves, with pointed arches resting on octagonal pillars, topped by a Mudejar ceiling whose decoration is still preserved beneath the 18th-century Baroque vault. The Tabernacle, one of the masterpieces of Spanish Baroque, was created by Francisco Javier Pedrajas between 1772 and 1784, and has been a National Monument since 1932. Its floor plan consists of an octagon surrounded by a lower gallery and a gallery, topped by an impressive fluted dome pierced at its base by eight large windows through which light floods the entire complex, which is preceded by a smaller square enclosure. This magnificent architecture is adorned with profuse Rococo-inspired mouldings and plasterwork.
