Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows

Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows

Altar único en Córdoba por su valor artístico y materiales. Sin dueños, mantenido por vecinos. Alberga una imagen del siglo XVIII con gran fervor popular.

On the former Calle de las Parras, now known as Obispo Pérez Muñoz, on the corner of the Plazoleta de la Cruz de los Mozos, there is an altar dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, unique in the province of Córdoba for its artistic value and the quality of its materials, as well as for the unusual fact that it has no owners, as it belongs neither to the local council nor to the church. According to oral accounts from local residents, it was built by the former owner of the adjoining house, who commissioned its construction out of devotion to the image, on an undetermined date. Following the owner’s death, it was the local residents who took charge of its maintenance and regular cleaning, although the structure itself has no owners. Inside, it houses the image of the Virgin of Sorrows, a polychrome wooden carving attributed to the Granada school and dating from around the last third of the 18th century.

The Virgin of Sorrows is the object of great popular devotion; it is no coincidence that it was from her square, La Cruz de los Mozos, that the young men called up for military service were bid farewell.
