If you look closely at this mural, you’ll see that it tells the story of any one of us. It’s that scene we’ve seen so often on our streets: a young couple, sitting on a wrought-iron bench, sharing secrets and laughter as the afternoon draws to a close. The setting couldn’t be more typical of our town, with that arch of roses that you can almost smell and our blue flowerpots hanging from the whitewashed wall, full of geraniums and gitanillas that bring every corner of Fuente-Tójar to life. It is a tribute to simplicity, to lifelong affection and to that sense of peace that can only be found in the villages of the Subbética.
But this mural has something special that makes us unique. If you look up, you’ll see that moon and those stars shining brightly. They aren’t there by chance. Since 2022, Fuente-Tójar has been proud to be a ‘Starlight Village’. And what does that mean to us? Well, something our grandparents already knew: that the sky we have here isn’t found just anywhere. Here, when the lights go out, the night becomes a real spectacle. We have one of the clearest and most transparent skies in the world, where the stars seem so close you could almost reach out and touch them. That’s why this bench you see depicted on the tiles is an invitation for you to pause for a moment too.
This mural is so that visitors know that in Fuente-Tójar we cherish who we are and also what we see up there. But for the people of Fuente-Tójar, it’s a reminder that you don’t have to go very far to find beauty. All it takes is a bench, good company and the sky of Tójar watching over us with its light. So, take a breather, enjoy this little spot and, when night falls, don’t forget to look up at the sky… because here, the stars shine in a different way!
