The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, built in 1630 and situated on a hilltop overlooking the traditional neighbourhood of La Barrera, is a clear example of the architectural evolution from Mannerism to the Baroque style and of the notable influence of Herrerian architecture on the first half of the 17th century. It has a Latin cross plan with interconnected side chapels, and above the transept rises a semi-spherical dome decorated with frescoes featuring phytomorphic motifs and a large central rosette, all set upon pendentives adorned with the coats of arms of the houses of Comares, Segorbe and Cardona. Inside, the high altarpiece stands out; it can be considered contemporary to the church’s façade, whose decorative elements in the El Escorial style are echoed in its structure. The church houses an important collection of paintings, some of which show a marked influence of Zurbarán, with possible attribution to Bartolomé de Ayala.
