Parish of Santiago
The Gothic-Mudejar-style parish church of Santiago was founded in 1503, in accordance with the will of García Méndez de Sotomayor, the Commander of the Order of Santiago. It has traditionally been regarded as a former Jewish synagogue, but it is possible that materials from the then recently demolished old church of San Mateo were reused in its construction; the old synagogue and mosque may actually have been located there. The church has a rectangular floor plan, featuring three naves divided by octagonal pillars supporting pointed brick arches with an alfiz. The three naves are covered with coffered ceilings reconstructed in the style of the original. Today, decorated in harmony with the Mudejar style of the rest of the church, it houses the Cristo de la Columna, a work by the renowned Sevillian sculptor Pedro Roldán, created in the 17th century, and Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza.
